Edgar Berlanga came out of the woodwork last night to call out super middleweight contender Diego Pacheco in his moment of glory following his win over Steven Nelson in Las Vegas. Berlanga posted on social media that he wanted to give her one “Big payday.”
A callout from the recently defeated Brooklyn, New York native reeks of Berlanga Clout-chasingThe #1 WBO is looking to get some cheap publicity by challenging Pacheco (23-0, 18 KOs) after his dominant performance against Nelson (20-1, 16 KOs) last Saturday night at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.
Promoter Eddie Hearn said he would be open to a fight between Berlanga and Pacheco. However, he seemed skeptical, as if he didn't believe Edgar was serious about fighting Diego. Haron is a wise owl who knows that the odds of a Berlanga-Pacheco clash are slim.
Berlanga's demand for money will likely skyrocket after the big purse he received for his successful title shot against unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. Like many fighters Canelo has faced, he's probably wasted and wants a similar grind in his next fight. That's not going to happen.
Even if the Berlanga vs. Pacheco fight is like the Puerto Rico vs. Mexico rivalry, the match won't make the PPV. It's not worth selling on pay-per-view, and it would require Turki Al-Sheikh to be involved for the kind of money Berlanga would likely want.
The 39-year-old is said to fight Berlanga Gabe Rosado Later in Puerto Rico to take advantage of his popularity in that country. He was treated like a hero after his loss to Canelo. The traveler Rosado is just up the street from Berlanger.
Berlanga was last seen in a 12-round unanimous decision loss to Canelo Alvarez on September 14 by these scores: 118-109, 117-110 and 118-109.
