Keith 'One Time' Thurman will return to the ring in two months to face junior middleweight Brock Jarvis on March 12 at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney, Australia.
The 36-year-old former WBA and WBC welterweight champion Thurman (30-1, 22 KOs) will be coming off a three-year layoff against the 27-year-old Jarvis (22-1, 20 KOs).
It is assumed that Thurman comes out of training camp without suffering a fight-cancelling injury, as was the case last year when he was scheduled to challenge Tim Tszyu for his WBO 154-lb title on March 30. Thurman pulled out of the fight with a bicep injury and was replaced by Sebastian Fundora, who upset CJ.
In the past, some would say Thurman was too old and inactive to have a chance at the big paydays. Now, with old timers like Mike Tyson returning, Thurman has a chance. He can't beat anyone with talent, but he could get some good pay if he gets injured. He is vulnerable, having suffered repeated injuries since 2017.
Thurman Eying Tszyu
The plan is for the winner of the Thurman-Jarvis fight to fight Tim Czew. However, you can't deny Turki Al-Sheikh's interest in Thurman should he win against Jarvis. Perhaps that's why Thurman is coming back after three years out of the ring because he hasn't done anything in his career since his loss to Manny Pacquiao.
“A shock Sydney showcase will be headlined on March 12 against Jarvis Thurman,” per Fox Sports Australia About Brock Jarvis fighting former WBA and WBC welterweight champion Keith 'One Time' Thurman. “A press conference will be held on Wednesday to release details of an event taking place inside Sydney's famous Hordern Pavilion.”
For a short time, Thurman was considered one of the best welterweights in the sport. However, his career slowed down after his tough fight against Danny Garcia in March 2017. In the last eight years, Thurman has fought Josecito Lopez, Manny Pacquiao and Mario Barrios just three times. Injuries have been a problem for Thurman, but he also lacks the ambition to stay busy like typical fighters who don't have large nest eggs to live on.
Aussie Brock Jarvis has fought mostly unknown opponents throughout his 10-year career. He stepped up once and was knocked out in the first round by Liam Paro on October 15, 2022. Since that fight, Jarvis has returned to fighting lower-level opponents, defeating Adrian Rodriguez and Marlon Panyamogan.
If Thurman has anything left after sitting on his back for three years, he needs to beat Jarvis. Still, it's questionable whether he does or whether he can even make it out of training camp without some sort of illness.
