Holmes finished with a 69-6 record. He lost a split decision to Denmark's Brian Nilsson 31-0. Nielsen was 49-0 when he lost to Dickie Ryan.

In Holmes' final fight, he came off the canvas in the final round, defeating 'King of the Four Rounders' Eric 'Butterbean' Esch, 66-2-3. He felt that if the four-rounder was scheduled in Esch's first 10, he would stop him, but he didn't.
