Andre: Avoid Canelo, Benavidez! – Boxing News 24

Demetrius Andrade Canelo has warned Alvarez to avoid his former winner David Benavidez after losing to him via sixth-round stoppage in 2023. Andrade thinks Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) is too big and threw too many combinations to beat Canelo.

It's understandable why Demetrius is trying to make Benavidez undefeated because it lessens the impact of his defeat against him. He took an ego hit in that fight, suffering the first loss of his career. So, he's trying to protect his ego by making Benavidez sound like he's some extraordinary talent when in reality he's not.

Benavidez's next opponent

We saw that in the fight against the 37-year-old Alexander Govozdik June 15. Gvozdyk recently came out of a four-year retirement to punch Benavidez and put all kinds of lumps in his face.

Canelo hasn't mentioned fighting 'The Mexican Monster' Benavidez, and the two fighters are now competing in different weight classes. The 28-year-old Benavidez fights at light heavyweight and will challenge the WBA regular 175-lb champion. David Morrell February 1st at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in 33 days.

If Benavidez loses that fight by knockout, he could return to the 168-pound division if he can still make weight. If Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) destroys him, it will be useless for him to be at 175. Morel is just as big as Benavidez but is faster, tougher, younger, and has better technical skills.

There's a good chance Morel will win that fight and permanently take care of Canelo's problems, not that he needs help. Andre, 36, may be impressed by Benavidez's offensive prowess, but he's not a knockout puncher. He couldn't even stop Caleb Plant.

The only reason he stopped Andrade was his size and youth advantage. He was 26 when he defeated Demetrius on November 25 last year.

Don't do it!

“I don't think Canelo is beating David (Benavidez). I don't blame him for not fighting David. Stay away from Canelo, David. Don't do it,” Demetrius told Andre Fight Hub TV. “I'm taller and taller than Canelo. I don't know if Canelo can (beat Benavidez). That's a big boy.

“You have to have the right skill set, movement, IQ, sharpness to beat David unless David fights the next biggest guy at 175 is going to be a different story. But at 168, you have to beat him.

“Canelo is smaller than me, and I was able to push David for a few rounds and do whatever I had to do. But at that weight and his length, and he knows how to throw punches in the bunch, it's going to be tough for Canelo.

“David is not one to give up on you. Canelo is not beating him,” Andrade said of his belief that Alvarez cannot beat Benavidez.

Canelo would have fought Benavidez by now, but he talked so much trash and came across as needy. The way Benavidez seems to fixate on Alvarez is scary, almost like a stalker. For any popular fighter to be so obsessed with the way Benvidez has arrived, they'd ignore him too.
