Promoter Eddie Hearn wants his fighter, IBF Cruiserweight Champion Jai Opetaya, to be his next opponent against Unified Heavyweight Champion Oleksandr Usyk to defend his title.

It would be 100% unfair to the heavyweight division's top contenders if Opetaya was allowed to fight Usic without earning a shot at his WBA, WBC, and WBO world titles by defeating contenders. What a silly joke and so, so wrong for sports.

From Hearn's point of view, it's understandable why he would want to give his fighter Opetaya a title shot against Usyk. It's money. There is no one else in his matchroom stable to fight Usyk after he was whipped twice by his flagship fighter Anthony Joshua, leading to an emotional meltdown inside the ring after his second loss.

After the performance he turned in against Dave Allen last week, Hearn will have to smile if he makes a play for domestic heavyweight Johnny Fisher to challenge Usyk for all three of his belts. Other than cruiserweight Opetaya, Fisher is the only one close to Hearn. He won't let Joshua fight Usyk and let him ruin his plans for a 'Battle of Britain' money fight against Tyson Fury.

If Opetaya can prevail through this mini-gauntlet, he will earn his title shot against Usyk. Other than that, he needs to get back to where he came from, back to the cruiserweight division, fighting weak, obscure fighters that the casual fan has never heard of and will never care about.

Opetaya will defend his IBF title against replacement opponent David Nyker (10-0, 9 KOs) on January 8th at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia. The fight will be shown live on DAZN. Naika has replaced the injured Hussain Sinkara.
