Washington – The Trump administration is working on an asylum deal with the government of El Salvador that would allow the United States to deport migrants in a migrant center they are not familiar with.

The arrangement, known as the “safe third country” agreement, will enable US immigration officials Deport non-Salvadoran migrants to El Salvador, instead blocking them from seeking asylum in the US instead, migrants will be deported with instructions to seek asylum in “El Salvador”, which will be designated a “safe third country”.

The plan, if completed, would restore an agreement with “the government of El Salvador,” although that agreement was never terminated by former President Joe Biden's administration.

The safe-country pact could be a significant advance for the Trump administration's aggressive immigration plans, allowing it to deport migrants from countries including Venezuela that cross the border or outright refuse to deport their own citizens.

One of the domestic plans presented in the bill would allow the US to send deportation flights to El Salvador that include suspected members of the Venezuelan Treni de Aragua gang, which President Trump has implemented in his crackdown on illegal immigration hours after his inauguration.

If that plan goes through, it's unclear how El Salvador will handle the rowdy deported members. According to President Naib Bukele, the Salvadoran government has cracked down on notorious El Salvador gangs, including MS-13, through a mass incarceration campaign.

Buquele's government is expected to be a key ally of the Trump administration.

The White House said Mr. Trump and Bookel spoke by phone on Thursday and discussed “working together to stop illegal immigration and crack down on transnational gangs like the Tren de Aragua.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has pledged to make curbing mass immigration a top priority, will visit El Salvador in early February to begin part of a trip to Latin America.

Representatives of the State Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Mr. Trump has already moved quickly to begin his immigration crackdown, giving deportation officers broader powers to arrest and deport unauthorized immigrants through an emergency declaration to counter immigration military force.

Military aircraft are now used To deport migrants crossing the border illegally, and there are additional active duty troops stationed at checkpoints designed to repel illegal crossings.Long-standing federal law generally prohibits the military from involving civilian law enforcement.

A safe third country agreement would add another layer to Mr. Trump's efforts to seal our borders to migrants and asylum seekers, both through physical barriers and broadcast policies.

It is unclear how such an arrangement would interact with Mr. Trump's other moves on asylum, including giving border agents The power to quickly deport migrants without allowing them to claim legal asylum.His administration is also restoring a rule known as Mexico, which requires asylum seekers to remain outside the US while their cases are reviewed.

The United States currently has a safe third country agreement, under which the governments of the United States and Canada exchange asylum seekers who cross their common border. The first Trump administration granted asylum to Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador entered into only one with Guatemala, and all three agreements were terminated when Biden took office.
