The Senate is seeking the nomination of Hegmes for Secretary of Defense

In a dramatic late-night session, the US Senate votes to replace Pete Hegshet as defense secretary, who has promised to bring a “fighting culture” to the Pentagon despite questions about his qualifications and aggressive behavior toward women.

Rarely has a Cabinet nominee faced such widespread concerns about his experience and behavior as Hegshet, in particular, for such a high-profile role leading the US military.

But the Republican-led Senate was determined to confirm Hegshet, a former Fox News host and combat veteran, to bypass President Donald Trump's national security officials.

US Vice President JD Vance was expected in the Senate, in the unlikely event he was needed to break a tie, and Hegsett was at the Capitol with his family to watch the vote.

Senate Majority Leader John Hovan opened Friday's hearing, saying that Hegshet, a National Guard veteran who served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, would bring a “combat perspective” to the case.

“Gone are the days of wake-up calls,” Haloon said, citing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Relaxing in the US Federal GovernmentA series of “Pentagon's focus will be warfighting.”

The Senate's ability to confirm Hegshet, despite a serious line of frontrunners against him, will ensure Trump's political power and the ability to get what he wants from the Republican-led Congress and the power of the culture wars to fuel his agenda to the White House.
