George Kambossos Jr. will headline in Sydney, Australia on March 22nd against a yet to be determined opponent. This will be the first fight for former unified lightweight champion Kambosos Jr. (21-3, 10 KOs) with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing. Skye Nicholson will be on the card.

Hearn did not reveal his plans for Kambossos. He wanted to schedule a fight between Kambossos and former IBF light welterweight champion Liam Paro in Australia, but after Paro's loss to Richardson Hitchins last December, that scuppered his plans.

Kambossos in Need of a Win

Hearn also promotes Hitchin, but a fight between him and Kambosos won't be big. Not the best use of Kambossos to feed him Hitchin and watch him lose. Hearn will likely focus on getting a big fight for Kambosos Jr. against someone like Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney or Ryan Garcia.

Cambos has lost arguably every fight in the past four years since his upset win over Teofimo Lopez on November 27, 2021. He had a questionable win over Maxi Hughes on July 22, 2023. Many boxing fans saw this as a defeat for Kambossos. Hughes dominated the entire fight.

“I think Hitchins is a good fighter. I think he needs me, but I want him because I see holes,” George told Cambos Jr Stomping ground When asked why he wants to fight IBF light welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins so badly.

“I think at 140 what I can bring to the table with his basic style. He is very original. He is good at basics. He has a good jab, left hand, a good right hand, but at 140, I think I can overwhelm him,” Combos continued about Hitchins.

“(Liam) Paro did very well in the first two rounds but got away with it. I think Paro got caught up in another possible mega-war attached to my name. I see things in that fight. I love New York. It's a good stomping ground for me, and I'm loved to be but obviously not loved. I'm the underdog.”

The fall of the emperor

Kambossos doesn't stand a chance against Hitchins or any of the other top 10-tier fighters at 140. He's the only one-hit wonder who lucked out with a narrow 12-round split decision win over Teofimo Lopez. a little 'Emperor' Kambossos' career sinks since when

Hitchins needs Kambossos for a paycheck and to get more attention on his career. However, in terms of opposition, Combosos is a big step back for Richardson. He's not in the same league as Hitchins' recent fights against Liam Paro, Gustavo Lemos, Jose Zepeda, or John Bauza.

“I think I'm just another loudmouth New Yorker. I feel like it all comes close. I'm back in the matchroom. I'm back with Eddie Hearn. I love Matchroom. I love Eddie Hearn's approach and vision. I feel relaxed. I have been with Lou since 2016. I love Lou…I think there is a good side and a path to becoming a champion again. I see it,” Kambosos said.
