Ryan Garcia has reportedly selected Rolly Romero as his opponent for May 2 in Times Square, New York. It came as a surprise to fans that Garcia handpicked Raleigh (16-2, 13 KOs) because he was not well liked and was knocked out as recently as last year.
Garcia vs. Romero will be the main event on Turki Al-Sheikh's May 2 card. Devin Haney will battle Jose Ramirez in the main support bout. It should be a flip-flop with Haney-Ramirez in the headliner spot and Garcia-Romero as the co-main event. Ryan is more popular than Devin because of his 12 million Instagram followers, and that's why he's in the top spot against Romero.
Boxing fans will give Ryan a pass to use Rawley as a tune-up on PPV as his next fight is a rematch with Devin Haney in October. So, they'll put up with Garcia taking tomato cans to Rollie Romero as he fights Devin next.
Garcia is counting on Rawley to draw interest in his fights with his trash-talking abilities outside the ring. That's the main thing that Romero is good at. He's a limited fighter, but he connects with fans with quirky interviews.
Still, he's done so poorly in his fights and hasn't looked good in a fight in years. He was knocked out by Pitbull Cruz last March and had poor performances against Ishmael Barro, Manuel James, Gervanta Davis and Jackson Marinez.
Initially, the discussion was between Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) and Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz. However, he chose not to fight as he was scheduled to fight Angel Fierro on February 1st. Cruz wanted to wait.
So, Ryan took the 29-year-old Romero as his opponent. The fact that Pitbull chose not to fight Garcia is what made the noise. But even with the decision not to take on Kingri, a better opponent would have been available than Raleigh.
Ryan's promoter, Oscar de la Hoya, was interested in Teofimo Lopez as his opponent, but he went with Raleigh instead.
