Promoter Bob Aram says he is not counting out his former fighter Terence Crawford in a title challenge against WBA/WBC/WBO super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez if they meet in a 12-round mega-fight this September.
Aram thinks Crawford's (37-year-old, 39 KOs) ability to switch hits will trouble Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs), just like Errol Spence did when they fought in 2023. Errol had too many matches against Crawford in 2018 to look slow, drained and nowhere near the fighter he was.
Crawford's bent southpaw on Canelo likely won't faze the Mexican star as he's fought many left-handed fighters and never had a problem with them. If Bud southpaws, it won't affect the fight other than taking a heavy shot while in a different position.
The real issue that Aram didn't mention is that Crawford is too old, small and weak to fight at 168. He's likely hoping to bulk up 14 pounds and duplicate what Floyd Mayweather Jr. did against the then-22-year-old Canelo. In 2013.
If Mayweather and Canelo fight now, the version of Floyd that fought Canelo will get knocked out. Alvarez is much stronger and more experienced now, and he will never settle for a catchweight of 152 pounds. Floyd just threw jabs, single right hands, caught and moved all night.
This style won't work now because Canelo will land hard shots and be seen as the aggressor, forcing Floyd to run. Crawford will do the same because he is older and weaker and can trade with Canelo. Just so you know, Terence turns 38 in September.
“I wouldn't count Crawford out in any fight because he has a unique talent; He's a great boxer-puncher, and he's completely unhinged,” Bob Aram said fight type When asked about Terence Crawford's chances against Canelo Alvarez.
“He drives his opponents crazy as they train to fight right-handed fighters and end up fighting southpaws. This is what happened to Errol (when he fought Crawford on June 29, 2023). Spence trained as a right-handed fighter and all he saw was a southpaw.
“I think what Crawford is looking for is Manny Pacquiao vs. Oscar De La Hoya,” Aram said of what kind of upset scenario he's looking for against Terrence Canelo.
It was a different situation when Oscar De La Hoya fought Manny Pacquiao in 2008. De La Hoya was a busy part-time fighter at that point in his career and fought at junior middleweight. He agreed to face Pacquiao at a catchweight of 145 and then lost a lot of weight by dieting. He looked terrible, made weight, and it showed in the fight.
Canelo won't be dieting or cutting weight for Crawford, and he's not an over-the-hill, part-time fighter like Oscar. If Crawford thinks Canelo will be another De La Hoya, he's fooling himself. They are two different people.
Canelo remains in shape, and he won't be willing to give Bud a catchweight handicap like De La Hoya did with Pacquiao. Oscar never should have done it because he was the 'Golden Boy', the superstar of that fight, and he could have forced Pacquiao to go up to 154 to fight him. It was a strange situation where De La Hoya leaned back to give Manny a better chance to even the playing field. By doing this he weakens himself and loses.
