Program: Raleigh's wildness might annoy Ryan Garcia

Regis Progress is not ruling out the possibility of former WBA light welterweight champion Rolando 'Rolly' Romero beating Ryan Garcia in their fight in New York's Times Square next May.

Sparring session flashback

Former two-time 140-lb champion Prograis thinks Rowley (16-2, 13 KOs) is so wild with his punches and has a tough time, he could catch Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) with something. Regis pointed to a sparring session between Garcia and Rolando from 2018 to support his case for Rolly winning.

Sparring has nothing to do with real fighting, especially when it happened seven years ago when Garcia was rail-thin and still a teenager. Rawley has looked like a below-average fighter throughout his career, and should arguably have two more losses on his resume from his fights against Ismael Barroso and Jackson Marinez, which would make his true record 14-4.

“Rally and Ryan, I saw the footage of the fight. I think it's not really a predictable fight, because they're both very wild, and both can punch,” Regis told Progress. Millcity BoxingDiscussing the May 2 fight between Ryan Garcia and Rolando 'Rally' Romero in Times Square, New York.

“Ryan can throw big punches, and Rollie can throw big punches. I'd say Ryan, but I don't know if you've seen the fight. Rollie was beating the s**t out of Ryan at the gym. Rolly is wild. And sometimes it's hard times and fighting with someone wild like that.

“So, I'll go with Ryan, but I'm not counting Rollie out until I hit him with something. I favor Ryan because he has more experience in bigger fights and things like that. I like him because he is a big star. He has that hook, but at the same time, Raleigh is wild and can catch him with anything. So, I'll just be rooting for Ryan, but it's going to be an interesting fight for sure,” said Progress.

Regis gives Rolly Romero a lot of credit for a sparring session that happened seven years ago in 2018. Ryan was 19 and Rollie 22 at the time. Kingery is now 26, and much older than he was during that sparring session. The way Rawley rushed Garcia during that fight would knock him out today as he nailed one of his left hooks.

Rowley will likely lose to Ryan's past opponents, Oscar Duarte, Devin Haney and Javier Fortuna. Better to fight Garcia in a rematch with Duarte than use the recently knocked out Romero as his opponent because he never had to fight him. It is surprising that the Turki al-Sheikh did not veto this choice of opponent. If it were me, I'd say, 'No, Rollie is inappropriate for the main event on the Times Square card. He doesn't even deserve to be on the undercard.'

A Hany rematch is inevitable

“Yes, I do,” when asked if he favors Garcia in a rematch with Devin Haney. “If Devin can beat Ryan, he can show his greatness. If you can beat someone who beats you (that's special). When you take all the supplements he (Ryan) was taking, and we take that out (the rematch could be different).”

It's a no-brainer that Garcia will defeat Devin Haney in a rematch. Fans who cling to the belief that the only reason Ryan won was because he tested positive for Osterine are kidding themselves. He won because he was the better fighter and Haney couldn't take a hard punch.

Devin's constant clinching home that he developed from his fight against Jorge Linares came back to bite him in the back in this fight, as it put him in the firing line for Ryan's short left hooks. Haney should have seen this rather than watching the tape Garcia in training camp, and confirmed he won't try to hold on.

Unfortunately, the excessive holdings that Devin makes are too accumulated for him to stop using. If you take that away from Haney, it will break him down, leaving him as a broken, weak fighter, fodder for just about anyone from 135 to 147. His whole game now revolves around jabbing and holding.

“We don't know if it's true or not, but the incident still happened (Garcia testing positive for asterin),” Regis said. “We can tell what was in his system, but that fight still happened. He still dropped her, hit her and dropped her three times. If he (Haney) can come out there and win, that will really show his greatness.

Regis on Haney v. Ramirez

“It's possible (Kingri knocked out Haney in the rematch), but we saw what Devin was doing. We got to see what he does first with (Jose) Ramirez. In boxing, anything is possible,” Progress said.

Regis is right about the need for fans to see if Haney wins his fight against former WBA and WBO light welterweight champion Jose Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) on May 2 because he could lose to him. The Turk did not say anything about Hani saying that Kingry would have to win the fight against Ramirez to get a rematch in October. So, it doesn't matter if Hany loses to Ramirez. It's a toss-up.
