Benavidez's cruiserweight future if Morrell wins?

Trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. predicts that his son, 'The Mexican Monster' David Benavidez, “destroy” David Morel in their light heavyweight bout in 11 days on February 1st on PBC on Prime Video PPV in Las Vegas.

This fight will show that Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) is just a “fake“The 'Monster,' fighting smaller opponents at 168, or if he actually is, living up to that hype. Morrell said he's seen fighters like Benavidez and found him 100% “fake.”

Now that Benavidez is fighting a smaller fighter his size at 175, but more power, he might be exposed by Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs).

Exit strategy already planned?

According to Tim Morrell, Benavidez hovers between 215 and 220. So, he can reinvent himself at cruiserweight if he fails against the talented Cuban on February 1st.

If Benavidez loses, he may have to decide if he wants to move up to cruiserweight and try to salvage his career at that weight class. Staying at 175 would be a mistake for him because if he can't beat Morel, he certainly won't be successful against Artur Beterbiev or Dmitri Bivol.

Jose Sr. is already having a discussion Exit strategyBenavidez is discussing the possibility of moving up to cruiserweight to challenge WBA and WBO champion Gilberto 'Jurdo' Ramirez for his belts. He will have to wait his turn until IBF champion Joy Opetaya faces Jurdo in a three-belt unification. But either of those guys would be open to fighting Benavidez if he loses to Morrell.

Even if he loses to Morrell, they're willing to fight him because he'll still be popular and he'll probably have an excuse to explain his loss. He cited the injury to explain why he performed poorly against Oleksandr Govozdik, and the fans believed him. He can do the same if he loses to Morell, and people will give him a pass.

“We are 100% locked in with Morel. He is a tough fighter, a young fighter. He is a two-time world champion and hungry. We're not underestimating this guy,' Jose Benavidez Sr. said Sean Zittel About David Morrell, who faces David Benavidez on February 1st.

“We are 100% there. David (Benavidez) is 28 years old. In my mind, I think David is going to destroy him (Morrell). Let's focus on that now. Sure, David has big dreams. He wants to fight the winner. Who doesn't want to fight the winner of Bivol and Beterbiev? There could even be a fight with Jurdo Ramirez at cruiserweight.

“Those fights are great. Great monster in that division, and great opportunity at that weight. Jurdo Ramirez is going to fight another guy (IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaya) for the belt, and hopefully, we'll get a chance to do the same,” said Benavidez Sr.
