Rolando 'Rolly' Romero was given a fight against Ryan Garcia on May 2nd while Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz chose not to take it due to his scheduled fight the previous month. This is Raleigh's chance to pull off an upset of ring-rust Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) on Turki Al-Sheikh's card in New York City's Times Square.
Cruz has a fight scheduled against Angel Fierro on February 1st and did not want to negotiate another fight after his match. Fans were hoping to see Ryan and Pitbull fight, as it would have been much more interesting than seeing Rawley given the match-up.
It is not clear if any other fighters were available that could have stepped up.
Former WBA light welterweight champion Rawley (16-2, 13 KOs) was knocked out by Pitbull Cruz in the eighth round on March 30 last year. It was a surprisingly one-sided fight.
On the May 2 card, Devin Haney will face Jose Ramirez, and heavyweight Martin Bakol will take on Efe Azgabar.
