Scientists studying crustaceans in Vietnam have discovered a new “super-giant” species of sea monster that bears a striking resemblance to the classic movie villain.
Deep sea bugs, or Bathynomus According to researchers who published their findings in the scientific journal ZooKeys, the species has been eaten regularly in Vietnam since 2017. The crustaceans, members of the isopod family, are fished from deep water, usually in the South China Sea, and sold to restaurants and other eateries. The study explored the unexpected popularity of crustaceans.
While conducting the research, the scientists noticed a species that they did not know. All isopods are characterized by hard, protective exoskeletons and seven pairs of legs, but they are usually incredibly small, about 2.5 centimeters. The researchers noted that the new species has become much larger, about 11 centimeters. and nine “giant” Bathynomus species, and this is only the second supergiant to be found in the South China Sea.
The species has been officially named Bathynomus vaderAfter “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader. The crab's head resembles Vader's iconic helmet, researchers said.
The new species also has a section on the back of its legs that tapers at the end and curves slightly backwards, which helped the researchers distinguish it from existing supergiant species, the study said.
The crab is believed to live more than 3,000 feet under water, CBS News partner BBC News reported.Researchers said they were caught off the Spratly Islands in Vietnam it will take a lot of work to figure out or whether the species lives elsewhere in the South China Sea.
