Shakur Stevenson reiterated this week that he would never fight his good friend, Keyshawn Davis, no matter how much money he was offered. The WBC lightweight champion said that he and Keyshawn used to go to the gym as kids and beat up different fighters. They became close.
Stevenson says that he and Kishon will “Take responsibility for the sport of boxing.” So far, neither of these two fighters has shown the ability to be a top draw in the sport. Shakur has an old, dull Mayweather on his last legs, and Kishon has a similar style.
The difference with Keyshawn Davis (12-0, 8 KOs) is that he's huge for the lightweight division and arguably should be fighting at 147 instead of 135. He looks huge for a lightweight. If Keyshawn is to fight where he belongs against killers like welterweight Jaron 'Boots' EnnisHis career will be worth nothing.
Keyshawn's promoters in the top ranks would probably never agree to allow him to fight on the boot because he would have no chance of success, and their investment in his career would be wasted.
Fighting younger, older guys in the lightweight division, Kishan has a chance to be a champion while he's young but not a star. If he moves to welterweight where he wants to fight, he is fodder for fighters in this division.
“When we came up, me and Kishan would go to each gym, and we'd whip a*. We used to go to the gym and beat (fighters) on some regular stuff,” Shakur Stevenson said to Cigar Talk. YouTube Chanel on why she'll never fight Keeshon Davis.
“Any gym. Like high level. When I got to Lomachenko, Kishon was beating a few other Olympic gold medalists there. Keyshawn was always with me. Once you reach that level, we knew this day was coming.
“It was only a matter of time. We knew we would both be able to whip (the fighters) a** and take over the sport of boxing. Now, the fans are going to demand and want to see us fight,” Shakur said, adding that fans have started pushing him and Keyshan to fight in a division that lacks name fighters at the top.
Kishon failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympics, losing to Andy Cruz of Cuba. It was not a close fight. As professionals, Keyshawn and Shakur have yet to defeat any high-level fighters. Shakur has defeated several older and younger fighters, including Oscar Valdez and Jamel Herring, but he has never faced anyone at the top level. That's why he chose to defend against Floyd Schofield. Shakur is desperate.
He's calling out Vassily Lomachenko and Garvonta Davis, but he hasn't gotten a knock from either of those fighters. One explanation for this is Stevenson's disturbing style. He is constantly booed by fans every time he fights, and has no fanbase outside of his hometown of Newark, New Jersey.
Keyshawn hasn't fought anyone as talented in his tenure and has shown zero interest in avenging his four losses to Andy Cruz. He seems keen to take the easy way out by challenging WBO lightweight champion Denis Berinchik on the 14th of next month. Davis says he believes he will fight WBA champ Gervonta Davis if he wins the WBO title. It sounds like a pipe dream.
“It's not about the money,” Shakur said, adding that Turki al-Sheikh would likely offer him and Keyshon a lot of money for the two of them to fight. “It's not about the money. I'm not one of those (fighters) that the money makes me, bro.”
It's too bad Shakur doesn't want to fight his friend Kishan, because that might be his best option for a big lightweight clash. Unless Turk Tank Davis offers a mega-million, that fight won't happen for Stevenson. IBF lightweight champion Vassily Lomachenko probably won't fight Shakur because he's nearing 37, and he doesn't want to fight a runner at this late stage of his career. If he was younger, Loma would have taken that fight in a second. Now, though, it doesn't seem possible.
Once you remove Tank and Lomachenko from the equation, only Keyshion remains for Shakur. There's William Zepeda, but he won't pay Shakur the kind of salary that Loma and Garvonta would fight against.
