Errol Spence vs. WBC/WBO 154-lb champion Sebastian Fundora is now off. The two were scheduled to fight on March 29, but the WBO decided not to sanction the contest.

Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) could next face Joey Spencer (19-1, 13 KOs). There is question whether the WBO will sanction that fight, as Spencer is not ranked in the top 154 ​​at 154. Lance Pugmire talks about the possibility of Fundora defending against Spencer. It's not a great fight, but there isn't much time to choose an opponent before March.

No Spence

It's a good thing Spence won't be challenging the 6'6″ Fandora for two of his titles as he was washed away in his last fight loss to Terence Crawford on July 29, 2023. The last thing Spain needs right now is a layoff at 154 to lose to a much younger and taller 26-year-old Fundora on debut.

The reasons for WBO not sanctioning the fight are as follows:

– Spence's layoff of 1.5 years
– Lose in the last fight
– Unranked at 154
– Never fought in the junior middleweight division

Apparently, using Spence as Fundora's opponent was a crazy idea, given his previous fight loss to Crawford, his long layoff, and his never having fought at 154.

He would have been completely unworthy of a title shot against Fundora, but you could say the same thing about not rating Terence Crawford's world title shot against WBA 154-lb champion Israel Madrimov last August. The fight happened even though Terrence never fought at 154.

Fans don't view Fundora as a strong champion due to his last fight against Tim Czew and his loss to Brian Mendoza. Beating Tszyu is no big deal, as we saw in his most recent third-round knockout loss to Bakhram Murtzaliev on October 19th.

The WBO will not sanction Fundora/Spence due to the following (1) 1 year and 5 months of inactivity; (2) a TKO loss in the last fight; (3) Not rated at 154 pounds, and 4) Never fought at 154 pounds.
