Teofimo Lopez has hinted at X that he is Ryan Garcia's next opponent for his fight in May.
Turki Al-Sheikh posted a photo of Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) signing a contract on social media today, saying, “The deal is done. The opponent is set.” Teofimo responded to the post saying, “Let the game begin.”
WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo will face Garcia in May for a tune-up fight in New York's Times Square. Haney will also be on the cards. One of the options being considered for his warmup bout is former unified 140-pound champion Jose Ramirez.
Fighting Teo is a crazy move on Ryan's part as he is a better fighter than Haney and is far more dangerous due to his powers. Lopez only lost once to George Kambossos Jr., and he didn't show his chin problem. You have to consider Teofimo a much stronger test for Garcia than Hani.
Is this a mistake for Garcia?
A loss to Ryan Lopez wouldn't be a surprise as he's not an opponent he can land a lot of hits with or take rounds off like he did in his recent win over Haney on April 20th.
Teofimo was in London for the Ring Awards last Saturday, looking like one of the movie's sunglasses-wearing nocturnal mutants. 'The Omega Man.' She looked haunted and out of place at the awards. Teo probably thought he looked cool, but he's like a plague mutant.
Garcia's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, already said last Saturday that Teofimo (21-1, 13 KOs) he wants next for Ryan, not Devin Haney. Ryan is still going to fight Devin in a rematch in October. This is part of the three-fight deal that Garcia has reportedly signed for the Turk. De La Hoya thinks it's a waste of time for Ryan to fight Haney again, but the Turk clearly feels differently.
