As a potential US ban hangs over TikTok and its American users, several social media apps have topped the app store charts.
Apps like Xiaohongshu, Lemon8, Clapper and Flip made the top five of Apple and Google's respective app store rankings for “Most Free” apps in the US on Thursday morning.
Two of the apps—Xiaohongshu and Lemon8—have been in particular focus.
Lemon 8 According to TikTok's latest press release, it allows users to “discover and share useful content about beauty, fashion, travel and more” through photos and videos.

Meanwhile, Shanghai-based Xiaohongshu has been operating since 2013. The program, nicknamed RedNote, is co-founded by Charlwyn Mao and Miranda Good.
“Xiaohongshu is a lifestyle platform that inspires people to explore and connect with different lifestyles, where more than 300 million users share their life experiences every month,” according to its description on the Apple App Store.

As of Thursday morning, the U.S. ranking in the Apple and Google app stores was No. 1 for free apps.
USA based social media app According to its website, Clapper is “focused on bringing local and global videos to all people.” It has capabilities like video, live streaming and radio.
In a blog post, it said its features make it “the perfect candidate to replace TikTok” should the ban happen.
Flip was also ranked in the US app store rankings for the best free apps.

It's a “social shopping app for discovering and shopping” with videos, Flip said on its website. The app currently only works in the US
The app's high ranking on the app store charts has TikTok users confused about the potential ban of the ByteDance-owned app in the US and what other apps they should adopt.
Instagram, YouTube and other popular social media apps also offer short-form video opportunities that could attract TikTok users considering new platforms in the event of a US ban.

The threat of a TikTok ban stems from a law signed by President Biden last year that seeks to ban the platform in the United States on Sunday unless ByteDance withdraws.

More than 170 million people in the US use TikTok. Led by CEO Shou Chew, the program launched in America in 2018.
ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, Lemon8 and other apps like CapCut and Lark, was founded in 2012.
