Heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma is seen by some fans as the UK's next world champion. They're impressed with the knockouts the fringe contender is scoring, but he's yet to fight anyone to show if he's for real.

His promoter is carefully matching him, but fans may be disappointed if Itauma is finally matched with someone with real talent.

Frank Warren-promoted 20-year-old Itauma (11-0, 9 KOs) knocked out journeyman Demsey McKean in the first round in Riyadh last week and has his British fans excited about his prospects. He drops McKean with a left to the back of his head first and knocks him down again.

The next big thing?

Some boxing fans are talking about Etauma breaking Mike Tyson's record to become the fastest heavyweight world champion. That's not happening. Itauma can't beat Mike Tyson's record Unless he gets the world title within the next four months. Mike Tyson was 20 and four months old when he captured his first world title, stopping WBC champion Trevor Barbick in the second round on November 22, 1986.

Putting Moses Itauma with heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois or Oleksandr Usyk would be a bad idea. He will likely be exposed, just like his brother, Karol Itauma.

It is still too early to tell if Itauma will pan out as he has yet to fight a world-class heavyweight and is not tall at 6’2″. Itauma's brother, Karol, also looked good early, but when he faced a decent light heavyweight, Ezequiel Osvaldo Maderna, he was knocked out in the fifth round.

Each fighter looks good early on when they match up against the kind of opposition that Moses is fighting against.

Drinking the Kool-Aid

“They see this kid as the next great heavyweight to come out of England, and they might be right,” Teddy Atlas said of him. channelTalking about 19 year old Musa Itauma. “Ben Davison is the coach. He is the same guy who trains (Anthony) Joshua and is doing well with him.

“His talent is undeniable. He doesn't look like a big punchy guy until he hits you. He (Itauma) has got a shot to break Mike Tyson's record to become the youngest heavyweight ever. He's only 11-0, though.

Itauma is a decent contender, but I don't see him winning the world title unless he follows in the footsteps of Kubrat Pulev and Mahmud Char by capturing the WBA 'regular' heavyweight strap. It doesn't take much talent to win that belt. With Usyk and Dubois around, Itauma isn't going to win any prestigious belts.

If some other contender, like Agit Kabayel or Martin Bakole, gets a world title, I don't see him beating either of those guys. Itauma is a good fundamental contender but not the next British heavyweight champion. He won't replace Tyson Fury or Anthony Joshua in being asked as the UK's next star.

“He's got a great promoter, Frank Warren,” Atlas said of Itauma. “He has the talent, but he doesn't have the experience to fight a Usyk or Dubois.

He has speed to go with it (power). He's cool, he's confident, and his technique is solid. They did a good job with him. If you have to have talent, you have to have good technique. He showed me he's smart,” Atlas said.
